Disney Plus Hotstar has been bringing some amazing web series recently to the Indian audience. Ok Computer is the most recent release from Hotstar Specials available in the India region of Disney Plus. If you’re into science fiction, then this series may pleasantly surprise you. Moreover, the creators of this show have paid attention to several details pertaining to life in the year 2031. However, this series received mixed responses from audiences. According to the Hindustan Times “OK Computer leaves the cast stranded in a mess of nonsensical plotting and half-baked ideas”. Let’s take a look at what other critics have said, before diving into why you absolutely need to watch this series.

Ok Computer – Mixed Responses

While the review of Hindustan Times was critically brutal, others like Gadgets360 have been slightly less aggressive. According to Gadgets360, “Ok Computer In the name of being comedic, forces quirkiness and idiosyncrasy everywhere”. However, others like NDTV have called “Insanely inventive” and have applauded the effort of Indian television. This is true because the fresh new take on comedy has been largely welcomed by the audience. Moreover, the not-so-subtle hints towards raging political, social, and psychological issues weaved into this series is a treat for sore eyes.

Republic World also said the Netizens have called this show “funny and entertaining“. This is because, Ok Computer brings in a misfit cast like Radhika Apte and Vijay Varma alongside the veteran actor Jackie Shroff. Apte and Varma have both been known for their intense roles. But this series casts them in a crazy light-hearted role. On the other hand, Jackie Shroff played the role of a nudist eco-terrorist of the future, which is hilarious to watch. The Indian Express said that Ok Computer “is an acquired taste but worth the effort”.

Ok Computer – The Plot and Narrative

The name of this series is derived from the famous novel by Douglas Adams – ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’. The tone of the series is also similar to this novel, that is comedy weaved into a science fiction plot. However, most viewers haven’t failed to notice the mocumentary take on this series. It is highly reminiscent of popular American shows like The Modern Family and The Office.

The story begins with a car accident and the death of a John Doe named ‘Pav Bhaji’, which in itself is unique and hilarious. However, this accident was unique because it was committed by a self-driven taxi. Set in 2031 Goa, this series showcases massive holograms, augmented reality adverts floating around the city, and of course, massive skyscrapers, all of which are an excellent work of CGI. The series stars a retired cyber cell detective Saajan Kundu (Vijay Varma) who is called in to investigate the suspected homicide. However, he is jumped by his ex-partner Laxmi (Radhika Apte) who is now a representative of a robot rights NGO. The series then revolves around solving this suspected homicide by the AI self-driven taxi. It also features the constant squabbles of Saajan and Laxmi.

But things get interesting when they realize that the real culprit may be a cult eco-terrorist leader Pushpak Shakur (Jackie Shroff).

Why You Need to Watch This Show

If you love Indian comedy series, Ok Computer may not sit well with you. This show doesn’t have the typical silly background music scores. It doesn’t have ragingly hilarious comedy. Moreover, you won’t find the typical cast of comedy actors. But you should watch this show because of its uniqueness. Besides, it is the first ever Sci-fi comedy genre TV series in India. Some might say that the tone somewhat resembles that of HBO series Peacemaker!
