Have you seen the Marvel’s Disney Plus mini-series I Am Groot? This 5 episode mini-series has won the heart of Marvel fans all over the world. Especially because of the ultra-cute protagonist known as Baby Groot. Honesty, what is cuter than a walking, talking, bonsai-like tree creature with a love for mischief? Moreover, his signature dialogue “I Am Groot” has almost become embedded in popular culture. Groot is a creature known as Flora colossus originating from the Planet X, as per Marvel Comics creators. According to comics lore, the Flora colossus species have very stiff voice boxes. Hence, the only sound that comes out of their voice box is “I Am Groot”.

The mini-series I Am Groot was not only fun to watch but also contained some secret Easter eggs that you may have missed. Here are the 5 Easter Eggs from I Am Groot that tie in this mini-series into the greater Marvel Cinematic Multiverse.

1. I Am Groot? Breaking the Fourth Wall

Groot and Water-based alien

Baby Groot has often been seen breaking the fourth wall in this mini-series. The other two Marvel characters that have been seen breaking the fourth wall regularly are Deadpool and She Hulk. In the starting credits, Baby Groot knocks down the camera that indicates he will be breaking the fourth wall quite a lot in the mini-series. In fact, he breaks the fourth wall when he flushes the water-based alien out of the air lock, declaring to the audience that he is the real Groot.

2. Time Jumps – I Am Groot!

Different stages of Flora Colossus

If you have watched the other Marvel movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, then you’ll notice the time jumps in this mini-series. In the first episode, Groot takes his first steps out of his pot. This timeline is right after the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie and just before the second one. The second episode takes place after the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie since we get to see the Ravagers ship.

3. Rick and Morty Reference

One of the biggest Easter eggs that you may have missed is the Tinyverse reference from the Rick and Morty adult cartoon series. The race of tiny blue Grunds that Baby Groot accidentally crushes is a direct reference of this. The Grunds despite being tiny have access to advance weaponry, which is similar to the Tinyverse episode of Rick and Morty.

4. I Am Groot?! Baby Groot is Dark

Throughout the 5 episodes, Baby Groot is shown decimating life forms wherever he goes. In the first episode he kills a bonsai tree, and in the following episodes he hurls a water-based alien into outer space. However, it starts to get dark when he accidentally kills an entire race of tiny creatures by stepping on them. But ripping the fur off of a squirrel-bird hybrid creature was possibly the last straw. This showcased the dark sociopathic side of Baby Groot’s persona. According to the directors, this Baby Groot is not actually a reincarnation of the original Groot but rather an offspring. Meaning, Baby Groot is an entirely new character.

5. I Am Groot but Nebula’s Yarrow Root

In the first episode where Groot battles the bonsai tree, you can spot the yarrow root that Nebula is desperately after. In the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Nebula is seen craving for an extraterrestrial vegetable known as the yarrow root. It looks somewhat like a turnip and radish combined into one. In the movie, Nebula finally gets hold of the yarrow root and tries to eat it in front of the Ravagers. However, just like Drax had warned her, it was still not ripe. We all remember this comic scene of Nebula taking a bite into the yarrow root and spitting it out, saying it wasn’t ripe yet. In the first episode of Groot’s mini-series, he hurls this same yarrow root at the bonsai.
