Anshuman Gaekwad –  A Former Indian Cricketer

Anshuman Dattajirao Geekwad was born 23 September 1952. He is an ex-Indian cricketer and a two-time Indian national cricket coach, and he was a part of 40 Test matches and 15 One Day Internationals. Datta Gaekwad’s father played Test Cricket for India.

Gaekwad is known for his defence against pace bowlers. It became a top priority as the West Indian pacers dominated world cricket. He was known as The Great Wall.

Anshuman Gaekwad, a former Indian cricketer, is now a coach for the Indian cricket team. He is known for his dedication towards cricket and played for India in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs. In December 1974, he made his Test debut against the West Indies. Gaekwad scored two 100+ runs and ten fifties. He also ran 70 innings in 1985, averaging 30.07 in Tests. He was a brave cricketer who was also well-known for his patience and unceasing style.

His record score of 201 against Pakistan at Jalandhar took 671 minutes. It was the longest double century in first-class cricket. After retiring from Cricket, Anshuman Gaekwad was employed by GSFC (Vadodara). He took early retirement in 2000. He currently resides in Vadodara (Gujarat, India).

He was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Board of Control for Cricket in India in June 2018. Gaekwad was appointed Indian coach after Kapil Dev resigned in 2000. From August to October, he was the Indian coach before John Wright took over.

Forbiddance in His Life

Gaekwad also experienced near-death during the pre-helmet period. In 1975/76, Michael Holding bowled fiercely against the West Indies, and Gaekwad was on 81 when one of his short balls struck him on the ear. Gaekwad was taken to hospital by Holding because the strike was so intense that he spent 48 hours in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He had to go through two more surgeries and continues to suffer from hearing problems. He ended his career as a professional player with a win in his last first-class match.
