Rishi Sunak is a British politician born in 12th may of 1980 who served as a chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022. He also previously served as a chief secretary to the treasury from 2019 to 2020. He has also been a member of the parliament since 2015 for Richmond. He was born in an Indian family to his Indian parents who had emigrated from East Africa. After being elected for Richmond at the 2015 general election, he served in Theresa May’s second government as a parliamentary under the secretary of state for local government. Sunak voted thrice for the favour of May’s Brexit withdrawal agreement. When May resigned, Sunak became a supporter of Boris Johnson’s campaign in order to become a conservative leader.

Sunak was born in Southampton to Indian parents Yashvir and Usha Sunak. He is the eldest among his three siblings. Yashvir was born and raised in the colony and protectorate of Kenya and Rishi’s mother, Usha was born in Tanganyika. His father was a general practitioner while his mother worked as a pharmacist and ran a local pharmacy. He got his education from Winchester college. He had a keen interest in philosophy, politics and economics and subsequently read from Lincoln college, Oxford. He later gained an MBA degree from Stanford University as a Fulbright scholar student. He met his future wife Akshata Murthy who is the daughter of N.R. Narayan Murthy, an Indian billionaire businessman who is the founder of Infosys while studying at Stanford. After his graduation, he started working for Goldman Sachs and later he became a partner at the hedge fund firms the children’s investment fund management and Theleme partners.

In October 2014, Sunak was selected as the Conservative candidate for Richmond. The seat was previously held by William Hague who was a former leader of the party and foreign secretary and the first secretary of the state. This seat has been held for over 100 years and is considered to be one of the safest seats in the United Kingdoms. In the same year Sunak was also the head of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Research unit of centre – right think tank policy exchange. He co-wrote a report on BME communities in the UK. He was a member of the Environment, food and rural affairs select committee during 2015-2017.

At the June 2016 membership Sunak left the European Union and supported the UK. In that period, he wrote a report to the Centre for Policy Studies supporting the establishment of free ports after Brexit and then following that year he wrote another report for the advocation of creating of a retail bond market for small and medium-sized enterprises. During the 2017 general election, Sunak was re-elected with an increased majority of 23,108. Later, on 24th of July 2019, Sunak was appointed as the Chief secretary to the Treasury by Prime minister Boris Johnson under the Chancellor Sajid Javid. The next day he became a member of the Privy Council.
